Woody Harrelson’s Weed Dispensary Application Denied In Hawaii

Woody Harrelson’s bid to open a medical marijuana dispensary in Hawaii has been denied

Last year lawmakers in Hawaii decided to move forward with a plan to open medical marijuana dispensaries throughout the state. And earlier this year they began accepting applications from people and companies hoping to set up shop. In all, there were more than 60 applicants. Probably the most well-known name on the list was Woody Harrelson. He applied to open a dispensary under the name of his company Simple Organic Living, LLC.

The Hawaii Department of Health finally released the names of applicants who will be allowed to open dispensaries. Out of the more than 60 people and companies, that applied, the state approved only eight. It gave the green light to three applicants on Oahu, two on Maui, two on the Big Island, and one more on Kauai.

Woody Harrelson was not on the final list. The state didn’t provide any explanations for why certain applicants were chosen, and others weren’t.

Harrelson has built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most outspoken supporters of cannabis. Some highlights from his cannabis resume include getting arrested for illegally planting marijuana seeds and making appearances in outfits made entirely out of hemp.

Harrelson is often a keynote speaker at big-time cannabis events. One of his most famous speeches came back in 2001. That year he went on stage at Seattle’s Hempfest and said: “I recently decided to stop smoking, but I thought more about it and decided I didn’t want to be a quitter!”

Along with all that he’s also on the advisory board of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML).

And he’s been featured in a couple of cannabis documentaries. But it appears that his efforts to open a dispensary in the Aloha State didn’t pan out this time around. Under Hawaii’s medical marijuana laws, the state will only approve eight people to open dispensaries. Each of those eight will be allowed to open two production centers and two retail shops.

That means that Hawaii could have as many as 16 new dispensaries in the very near future. Medical marijuana is now legal in 25 states and Washington D.C. Pennsylvania is the most recent state to join that list. On April 13, the Pennsylvania House gave medical marijuana its final vote of approval. Governor Tom Wolf signed it into law a few days laters.
