Get A Bigger Harvest With The Sea of Green

For growers with limited space or time, the Sea of Green (SoG) method bring big harvests from little rooms.

The Sea of Green method refers to growing several small plants close to one another.  As the plants get bigger, they form a canopy of buds and leaves–hence the name.

Using all of the room’s available light, SoG provides a much higher yield in a shorter span of time than a couple plants in the same space would provide.

And since the plants grow closely, they don’t need to remain in their vegetative state as long, using most of their energy for fruiting.

With the proper strain selection and ideal conditions, growers using SoG have been able to harvest twice flower than using conventional methods.

Here is how you do it:

  1. Sprout your seeds or root clones in one gallon buckets or grow blocks
  2. Grow your weedlings for about 2 weeks, using an 18 to 24 hour light cycle and appropriate light for vegetative growth (metal halide or comparable spectrum LED)  Note: High Intensity Discharge lights (such as metal halide or high pressure sodium) are recommended since they are best suited to fill rooms with strong light.  Be sure to keep the lights high enough up so all the plants get equal light.
  3. Once the plants have reached a height of 10 to 12 inches (about two weeks, depending on strain), space them so there are about 1 to 2 plants per square foot
  4. Switch to fruiting light cycle (12 on / 12 off, using high pressure sodium lights)
  5. Soon the plants will get bushy, creating a canopy and sprouting nice big top buds.  Trim the excess foliage and lower branches.  Protip: clone these branches for your next round.
  6. Harvest once the buds are ready
  7. Repeat

Fertilizer for thought:

Here are a few things to keep in mind when using the SoG method.

  1. Strain selection: indica strains tend to do better since they grow shorter and grow a single, big topper bud.  Most sativas grow too leggy to be effective for SoG.
  2. Water less than usual: drier conditions control growth, but don’t stress your plants by not giving them enough water
  3. Don’t over fertilize your plants, which can cause the plants to stretch out
  4. Maintain a good steady airflow over the tops of the plants
