Talk To The Hand Movement Calls Out Hyprocisy Of U.S. Government

Talk To The Hand

Long Story Short

Last week the DEA denied a petition to remove cannabis from the Schedule I category of illegal drugs. The agency said it wouldn’t reschedule cannabis because the plant has no proven medical properties. Now, cannabis advocates around the country are protesting the DEA’s actions with a movement that many are calling the “Talk to the Hand” campaign.

Calling Out Hypocrisy

When the DEA refused to reschedule cannabis it doubled down on its position that the plant has no medical benefits and that it’s an extremely dangerous drug. Cannabis remains in the same category as drugs like heroin. And the DEA considers it to be even more dangerous than things like cocaine and meth.

But here’s the craziest part of all. At the same time that the U.S. government is doubling down on all these claims, it also owns a patent on the cannabinoids found in cannabis. And that patent says the exact opposite of what the DEA says.

Here’s what the official patent says:

Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties . . . . This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment . . . of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia. Nonpsychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidoil, are particularly advantageous to use. . .

All that is a little jargony. But let’s break it down a little bit.

The U.S. government owns patent #6630507 on cannabinoids found in cannabis. And the basis for that patent is that cannabinoids have proven to be effective at treating everything from strokes to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and complications stemming from HIV/AIDS.

Cannabis advocates know about the government’s patent. And now they’re calling out the hyprocisy of a nation that says the plant should be illegal because it has no medical uses while at the same time owning a patent on it because of its numerous medical benefits.

Talk To The Hand

Since the DEA’s announcement, people have been writing the patent number (6630507) on their hands and then posting pictures and videos of it on social media. The idea is to call out the U.S. government’s double standard regarding cannabis.

The person who started the campaign is Amy Hilterbran. She told the media that the government’s patent “proved there was ample evidence to support the medicinal aspects of cannabis.”

“This one patent disqualified cannabis from even being on the Controlled Substances Act,” she said.

If you agree with her, join the movement by posting your own “talk to the hand” photo. And in the meantime check out the other pics and videos people are uploading.
