Nick Diaz’s Love For Weed is Holding Up A UFC Comeback

Nick Diaz’s love for weed is holding up a UFC comeback. Will the veteran MMA fighter ever return to the octagon?

After not stepping in the octagon in over two years, it appears Nick Diaz’s love for weed is holding up a UFC comeback. The 33-year-old former Strikeforce welterweight champ hasn’t fought since January 31st, 2015, when he battled and lost to UFC legend, Anderson Silva. Unfortunately, for Diaz, he hasn’t been able to participate in the sport he loves, because, frankly, he seems to love weed more. And it’s hard to blame him.

Diaz’s Suspension

After the Silva fight, Diaz was suspended for testing positive for testing positive for substances drostanolone, androstane, oxazepam, and temazepam. His suspension was initially for 5 years but was later reduced to 18 months due to mistakes in the NSAC testing procedures. He has since come to an agreement with the Nevada Athletic Commission for fighting eligibility in all 50 states. However, Diaz has recently turned down several fights. It’s not hard to see why–Diaz doesn’t want to be tested because he’s a hardcore stoner.

Diaz and Weed

Basically, Nick Diaz’s love for weed is holding up a UFC comeback indefinitely. Nick Diaz’s love for weed is well documented, but it’s actually his job outside of the octagon that makes him such a hardcore weed fanatic. Diaz is sponsored by several cannabis companies, so naturally, he’s always smoking the stuff they give him.

Diaz is apparently frustrated that the USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) only seems to contact Diaz when he’s smoking weed. Doesn’t seem like too much of a coincidence, since it seems as if Diaz is ALWAYS smoking.

Diaz told MMA News:

“They know where I’m at though. Somebody over there is not doing their job. I mean realistically, they showed up to one of my dispensary signings. Like I said, I gotta do what I can with what I have to work with when I’m not fighting. The whole cannabis industry thing is a hit right now, so yeah, I’ll book an appearance over there and I’ll go and smoke a bunch of weed and it’s a good time. So of course, word is out I’m gonna be here, they show up.”

For Diaz to make a full-fledged comeback, he’s going to have to pass a string of drug test from the USADA. Obviously, the USADA isn’t too fond of weed so it doesn’t look like that’s going to be happening anytime soon.

Final Hit: Nick Diaz’s Love For Weed is Holding Up A UFC Comeback

If Diaz does return to the UFC, it would mark his third comeback in the league for his career. As somewhat of a journeyman, it’s not hard to see why he’s enjoying his current endorsements so much. Diaz is clearly reluctant to give up smoking because it’s technically his main source of income at the moment. It’s tough to imagine someone giving up a string of endorsements just to get their head pounded in. But apparently, Diaz is ready to return to the ring. He just doesn’t seem ready to give up smoking. Eventually, something has to give.
