Kamala Harris Admits She Smoked Weed and Inhaled

Harris admitted to smoking cannabis in the past and vocalized her support for federal legalization.

Earlier this morning, recently announced Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, did an interview on “The Breakfast Club.” When the conversation turned to the topic of marijuana legalization, Harris mentioned two interesting points. First, she said she has indeed smoked weed before. Second, and much more importantly, she said she supports the legalization of cannabis at the federal level.

Kamala Harris Confirms She Has Smoked Weed

During the interview, Breakfast Club host Charlamagne tha God asked Harris about her stance on marijuana law. As part of his question, he asked her if she has personally smoked weed.

“I have,” Harris said. “And I inhaled. I did inhale,” she added, joking about former president Bill Clinton’s infamous claim that he smoked weed but didn’t inhale. “It was a long time ago, but yes.”

As a follow-up question, Charlamagne asked if she would smoke weed again if it ever became legal at the federal level. Harris’s answer was a bit more cryptic on this point: “I think it gives a lot of people joy and we need more joy.”

Kamala Harris’s Take on Legalization

While it might be interesting to hear about her personal connection to cannabis, Harris’s perspective on cannabis law is much more important, especially given her position as a presidential candidate in 2020.

During her conversation about marijuana, Harris clarified her position on marijuana law. Specifically, she was asked to comment on rumors that she does not support legalization.

In the past, Harris has been criticized for what many perceive to be a lack of support for legalization. For starters, she was formerly a state attorney general and prosecutor known for being relatively “tough.”

Additionally, she came under fire for appearing to laugh off a question about legalization back in 2014. That year, during her campaign for re-election to the position of California Attorney General, she was asked for her opinion on marijuana legalization.

As summarized by California new source SFGate, Harris simply laughed at the question and said her opponent—who clearly voiced his support for legalization—was entitled to his opinion.

As a result of her somewhat murky past statements on marijuana, many are unsure where the potential presidential contender stands on the issue. But when asked about it this morning, she said rumors that she doesn’t support legalization are not true.

“That’s not true,” she said. “Look, I joke about it, I have joked about it. Half my family is from Jamaica, are you kidding me.”

2020 Presidential Race and Legalization

Harris recently announced her intentions to run for president in 2020. She is part of a growing number of Democrats to enter the fray. And so far, it looks as if the issue of federal marijuana legalization could be a big question next year.

Obviously, with today’s interview, Harris has stated her support for legalization.

Similarly, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, who also recently announced his intention to run next year, has been an outspoken supporter of legalization.

In fact, he called for nationwide legalization in the very first radio interview after his announcement.
