Follow these steps with a hair straightener:

1. You’ll want a straightener that can go to 300° Fahrenheit or lower. Set it to 300 or your desired temperature.

2. Take a piece of parchment paper and fold it in half. Place a nug inside at the center so there is plenty of paper on the sides of the herb.

3. Line up the parchment with the straightener’s plates ensuring the weed is at the center.

4. Using gloves or a towel, press down and squeeze the bud as hard as you can for 5 to 10 seconds before stopping. Light sizzling is a good sign.

5. Remove the weed puck. You can collect these and squeeze them again to get anything you missed.

6. Let it cool and use your dab tool to collect what’s on the parchment paper for a dab.

The lower the temperature you use the better the product tends to be. 250 to 290° Fahrenheit will preserve terpenes and cannabinoids for a better high and more flavor. However, lower temperature means a lower yield. You’ll have to decide between quality and quantity.

This process is much safer than making BHO which requires working with a highly volatile explosive. You can get away with spending less on a large press than you would on a closed loop extraction system. Keeping butane stocked at all times isn’t cheap either.

It’s also less of a complex and time-draining process than working with butane. For BHO you may spend two to three days purging the gas out of your product. Rushing this process results in a bunch of leftover butane which is harmful when inhaled.

Rosin, on the other hand, can be safely dabbed right away. If you want something done right do it yourself!

One of the main disadvantages would be the overall yield. BHO remains the king of high yields. Another is that for rosin you need a product with a good amount of resin glands. Oil can still be easily extracted from low quality dried material or trim using the BHO technique.

Another con is there’s just way more manual labor involved with the rosin technique. You’ll be continuously folding paper, pressing, and collecting. You can extract a lot more with a lot less effort using the BHO technique.
