Retired Cop Blasts Officers For Bragging About Weed Bust On Facebook

Things backfired for the Tennessee Highway Patrol when a retired cop blasted officers for bragging about a weed bust on Facebook.

It’s actually pretty common for police officers to use social media in their war against weed and other drugs. Sometimes it’s to solicit help. Other times they try to crack jokes or show off drug raids. And every once in a while the entire thing backfires. That’s what happened recently when a retired cop blasted officers for bragging about a weed bust.

A Social Media Backfire

Earlier this month, the Tennessee Highway Patrol posted an image on Facebook that showed two officers immediately after making a weed bust. The caption described the scene: “THP Cookeville Sgt. Jimmy Jones and Trp. Kevin Ballew with 20 lbs of marijuana seized during a traffic stop in Van Buren County.”

The photo shows the two officers standing in front of a patrol vehicle. Multiple bags of weed are spread out across the hood of the SUV.

Presumably, THP thought folks would be happy to see their successful weed bust. But not everyone was into it. In fact, the most popular response was from a fellow officer who was not happy with what was going on.

A man named Tony Shope saw the post and blasted the officers for bragging about the weed bust. “What a waste of good officers time. I am a retired 26 year cop and believe weed should be legal all over,” he wrote.

“The south will figure that out one day. I would any day rather deal with someone smoking than the DUI/DWI from the bar.”

He finished with some advice for the officers in the photo: “You have better things to do. I quit apprehending MJ cases years ago as it wasted the courts and my time.”

In less than a week, Shope’s comment has shot to the top of the post. More than 800 people have liked his response. Whatever the THP was hoping to accomplish with the original Facebook post, it quickly turned into an opportunity for pro-weed folks to speak out against the war on drugs.

It’s pretty easy to find drug- and war on drug-related posts all over social media. And many times, these posts turn into unexpected and sometimes funny threads.

For example, toward the end of August, a teenager in Lawrence, Kansas tweeted a video of his friend vaping in front of a cop car. Things took a funny turn when the Lawrence Police Department replied to the post.

They informed the teen that his friend had actually vaped in front of a water service vehicle. The entire thing pretty quickly turned into a giant joke, as the kid who posted the video was trolled by pretty much everybody.

Now, thanks to the Tennessee Highway Patrol and former officer Tony Shope, we’ve got our latest social media battle. And this time, it’s the cops who are getting roasted.
