There’s a new cautionary tale about the dangers of smoking: a man kills co-worker for getting him addicted to weed and cigarettes. In India, a man devasted by his recent cancer diagnosis resorted to murder. He had been friends with his victim but blamed him for his constant and heavy smoking.

The Blame Game

In West Delhi, India, a 25-year-old cook by the name of Mustakeem Ahmad was at the end of his rope. He had been working at a restaurant owned by his brother-in-law. He and his co-worker, identified in the media only as Inayat, became friends, as people working together often do. There was one problem though. Inayat was a better employee than Ahmad. According to reports, Inayat worked harder and was better at his job than Ahmad was. He was also more affable. As a result, the boss favored him. Even though Ahmad was the boss’s family member.

Over the course of their friendship, Inayat allegedly introduced Ahmad to weed. Because he was so upset that Inayat was his boss’s favorite at the restaurant, Ahmad resorted to heavily smoking cigarettes and cannabis as a method of stress relief. Evidently, he was smoking quite a bit, because he needed to see a doctor for what he believed to be a throat infection.

His doctor diagnosed him with throat cancer due to his habit of excessively smoking. Understandably, the cancer diagnosis proved to be distracting for Ahmad, and it negatively affected his work. He was eventually fired from his job and moved back to his home village.

There, he purchased a gun and started to practice shooting targets. When he was confident in his aim, he went back to West Delhi. He asked his brother-in-law to fire Inayat. When he refused to get rid of his favorite employee, Ahmad picked a fight with his former friend and ended up shooting him. He died at the hospital and Ahmad was arrested on Friday. The latter tried to justify the murder by saying that Inayat was to blame for his cancer.

Obviously, Inayat was not at fault. While it may be true that he introduced Ahmad to the world of weed smoking, he could not have possibly be held accountable for either Ahmad’s apparent addiction to smoking nor his subsequent cancer. If a man kills co-worker for getting him addicted to weed and cigarettes, it just means that the man in question has completely shirked personal responsibility. This is further evident by the fact that he was angry at Inayat’s status as the favorite employee, despite the fact that the status was earned by hard work and a good attitude.

Could the murder have been prevented if Ahmad had only been smoking weed, instead of tobacco? Since cannabis doesn’t cause cancer, it’s possible. But Ahmad premeditated the killing of his former friend. Cancer seemed to just be the tipping point.
