Employers Are Now Encouraging Cannabis Smoke Breaks

Most would think that companies urging employees to take pot breaks were trying to create a workforce of slackers.

To the contrary, there’s a new push among employers in weed-legal states to get let their workers toke on the job.

A few Denver companies not only allow but actually encourage their employees to break for marijuana.

While the companies are in the cannabis industry, their founders say they encourage pot consumption on breaks because it helps employees’ productivity and creativity.

In fact, recent studies have begun to confirm the connection between creativity and cannabis consumption.

Employees of Flowhub, which provides “seed-to-sale software” for the cannabis industry, are allowed to bring in cannabis-laced edibles and beverages.

The reason behind the smoke-free forms of cannabis has to do with how Colorado does not allow smoking of any kind indoors. Voters legalized marijuana for adult recreational use in November 2012.

Flowhub co-founder and CEO Kyle Sherman explains to CNN:

“If it helps our employees get work done, then we don’t care if they consume at work.…

“It definitely surfaces new ideas and a fresh take on things.”

High There! — a company behind a social media platform for marijuana users — also allows pot consumption at work, usually later in the day or during brainstorming sessions.

Some tasks are better suited to consuming cannabis than others. If it comes to managing the books, or meeting with perspective clients, then being stoned doesn’t make the most sense.

But if the job involves creative thinking, problem solving, or project planning, then cannabis can be a powerful stimulant.

So far, there haven’t been any negative outcomes.

“Our clients are some of the biggest firms in the cannabis industry,” said Sherman. “We have to be on point with our work. We’ve never had a problem yet.”

Encouraging smoke breaks also increases worker morale and camaraderie, making for a better work environment and more satisfied employees.

High There! co-founder Darren Roberts tells CNN that marijuana is part of the company’s culture and brings other benefits:

“It has led us to breakthrough moments for our business. So yes, it’s been very effective for us.”
