Does Lady Gaga Smoke Weed?

Does Mother Monster make music with weed? Is Lady Gaga is a stoner like us, or is her art otherworldly all by itself?

Does Lady Gaga smoke weed? She’s a musical powerhouse, a queer icon, and a never-ending source of talent, ambition, and eccentricity. Was she born this way, or can we attribute at least a tiny part of her success to cannabis?

Who is Lady Gaga?

Her friends and family know her as Stefanie Joanne Angelina Germanotta, but to her millions of fans and followers, she’s Lady Gaga. Born and raised in New York City, Lady Gaga dropped out of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts to pursue a career in music. Her choice was a gift to the music industry– and to the world. In 2008, Lady Gaga had her breakthrough. She released her debut album The Fame, and then a year later released her follow-up EP titled The Fame Monster. Both albums saw immense commercial success and shot Lady Gaga to stardom. Because of her music video for her single “Bad Romance,” Lady Gaga became the first artist to get over a billion views on Youtube.

Since her breakthrough, she’s been consistently creating, performing, and being an all-around badass. In 2012, she started the Born This Way Foundation, which centers on youth empowerment. She’s also a relentless and fierce advocate for LGBTQ people and the issues that specifically affect that demographic. She and Elton John have worked together to benefit the Born This Way Foundation and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

In addition to her foundation, she’s collaborated with various organizations and companies to donate millions of dollars to causes that benefitted the 2010 Haiti earthquake relief, the Japanese Red Cross, the American Red Cross, anti-fracking efforts, and HIV/AIDS-related organizations.

In between her philanthropy and musical career, she managed to find time to play a lead role in the fifth season of American Horror Story. She won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film.

She’s also won six Grammys, two GLAAD Media Awards, and Glamour’s Woman of the Year Award, among many others.

Puff or Pass?

Does Lady Gaga Smoke Weed?

Because of her mass appeal and saint-like reverence from the LGBTQ community, one might wonder if Mother Monster has any vices. Does Lady Gaga smoke weed?

She has. A lot. In a 2013 interview with the British magazine Attitude, Lady Gaga disclosed that she had developed a cannabis dependency. While she had been experimenting with drugs since the start of her career, a serious hip injury and subsequent surgery led to her smoking weed at least fifteen times a day to cope with her pain.

She also shared with the magazine that her friend, acclaimed and controversial artist Marina Abramovic, helped her kick the dependency:

” said, ‘Okay you’re coming to my house, no television, no computer, no marijuana, no nothing, no food. For three days, art only. You eat only art,” Gaga recalls. “I cold-turkeyed. For weeks and weeks I didn’t smoke at all.”

Final Hit: Does Lady Gaga smoke weed?

So did Marina Abramovic’s intervention completely quell Gaga’s desire for cannabis? Not quite:

“Now I smoke a little bit at night, just, you know, for fun– but not to cope,” “That’s the difference. Marina was the only person who could get me to do that and it was not intended to be rehab.”

In a more recent interview with People Magazine, Lady Gaga revealed that she wanted to “challenge herself” to be an artist without the influence of weed.

“I do put that pressure on myself; I have to be high to be creative. I need that, that’s an error in my life that happened for over 10 years. Can I be brilliant without it? I know that I can be.”

So the answer to your burning question of “does Lady Gaga smoke weed?” is yes. For the time being, at least.
