Clean A Bong Properly With These Simple Steps

Looking for directions on how to clean a bong? Bongs are the art-pieces of the weed world, sculpted by skilled glass blowers with a penchant for beautiful and intricate designs.  Below are several steps to help you clean a bong and better yet, keep it clean!

But all those twists and turns in your glass means one thing: resin buildup. And with all those hard to reach places, bongs are notoriously difficult to clean.

After a few months of regular use, you may feel you have no hope of ever getting your bong back to that sparkling look it had when you brought it home from your local smoke shop.

What You’ll Need:

  • A deep sink or tub with running water
  • An Alcohol Solution (options below)
    • 91%+ Isopropyl (popular choice)
    • 70%+ Isopropyl (for lighter cleaning)
    • 100% Acetone/Nail Polish Remover (for heavier cleaning)
  • Some Coarse Salt (options below)
    • Epsom Salt (popular choice)
    • Coarse Sea Salt
    • Rock Salt
  • Plugging/Stuffing Material (options below)
    • Cotton Balls (popular choice)
    • Q-tips (smaller openings)
    • Hand towels (larger openings)

Step 1: Prepare the Bong

The most popular way to clean a bong is also the most effective.

You’ll need a deep sink or tub, some alcohol solution—we recommend 91% isopropyl—and some coarse salt, like Epsom Salt or sea salt.

Make sure to grab some plugging and stuffing materials to cover those holes: Q-tips for the smaller ones, cotton balls or hand towels for the bigger ones.

First, run some hot water through your bong to get the resin all gummy and pliable, then dump in your alcohol solution with a palmful of coarse salt.

Step 2: Now or Later?

Here’s where you get to choose your adventure. If you can handle some delayed gratification, add a bit more alcohol and let your bong sit overnight.

That’ll loosen up virtually all of the buildup, making cleaning it out a breeze. Or, if you want it clean right now, read on.

Step 3: Shaken, Not Stirred

If you want your bong clean now, start shaking it up with the alcohol and salt inside, make sure you plug the holes, though!

The salt will act as a light abrasive to clean the tight spots along the inside of the glass.

Here’s a pro tip if you’ve got the tools: use a water flosser to blast resin out of those hard to reach places, just like you’d use it to blast plaque off your teeth.

Step 4: Rinse and Repeat

Once you’re done shaking, run plenty of warm water through the bong to get rid of any salt and alcohol, because that stuff will ruin the taste of your cannabis smoke.

The alcohol will also evaporate quickly so that it may take waiting just a few more minutes.

How To Keep Your Bong Clean

So now you’ve got your bong clean, but do you know how to keep it fresher for longer?

There are a few tricks you can use to prevent your bong from getting grimy.

Step 1: Fresh Water = Fresh Bong

The most obvious is to use fresh water and to replace your bong’s water regularly. Storing your bong without water in it also goes a long way.

Step 2: Use A Drop of Lemon Juice

But perhaps the most rewarding way to keep your bong fresh is to add a few drops of pure lemon juice to your bong water.

Not only will you have the faint hint of delicious citrusy flavor, but you’ll also eliminate the notoriously bad smell of used bong water.

The active enzymes in the lemon juice break down the resin, preventing buildup in the inside of your glass.

Keep to a few small drops, though. Otherwise, you’ll overpower the subtle flavors of your cannabis. Now, you’ve mastered how to clean a bong!
