Choosing the Right Strain For Home Growing

With thousands of weed strains already in existence, and more popping up everyday, finding the right strain for home growing can be dizzying.

You can find a strain that is right for you and this guide will help.  Just asking yourself a few preliminary questions will help you narrow down your selection.

How High?

The first question you want to ask yourself is: how high do I want to get?

Are you looking for medicine or are you wanting to have a good time or a little of both?

Different strains produce different effects, and knowing what effect you want from your weed is the first important step.

How Big?

The next thing you want to consider is how big of a space are you growing in.

Not all strains grow the same and have different environmental preferences.

Indica plants grow differently than Sativas, and knowing the difference can help you choose the right strain for your space.

Indicas:

  • Short, bushy plants
  • Generally more hardy
  • Resistant to cold
  • Fickle about heat

Sativas:

  • Grows tall
  • Tends to be more fickle
  • Does well in heat
  • Not very cold tolerant

With indica-sativa hybrids becoming increasingly popular, it is important to know what the growth characteristics of your plant(s) will be.

How Long?

Different strains take different amounts of time to reach maturity.

Autoflowering varieties go from seed to harvest in as little as 8 weeks, requiring no change in lights, while other strains require 8 weeks or longer to get through the vegetative state.

Since fast-harvest varieties have a shorter vegetative period, there is less plant to support bud growth, providing a smaller yield.

Homework Time

Talk to friends, the budtender at your local dispensary, or Google it: find out as much as you can about your favorite strains.

Make a list of your 4 or 5 favorite strains and start researching their growth traits.

Consider these characteristics in relation to what your expectations and your grow space.

Finally, don’t be afraid to experiment with different strains: growing weed is an art, sometimes you explore to see what works for you.
