Artist Fernando de la Rocque took it to an entirely new level when he came up with the idea of painting with cannabis smoke itself.

Cannabis and art have a long history together, but artist Fernando de la Rocque took it to an entirely new level when he came up with the idea of painting with cannabis smoke itself. Fernando de la Rocque is a Brazilian artist who apparently takes the claim that marijuana can make you more creative pretty seriously. So much so, in fact, that he came up with a brilliant way to turn a smoke sesh into a medium for creating art.

He says he “stumbled upon” the idea of using actual cannabis smoke to create images back in 2009. Since then, his creations have regularly rocked the art world and blown minds.

Here’s what he does: he first creates a stencil. Usually, he goes for images of well-known religious, cultural, or political figures. Then he sets the stencil on top of a particular kind of paper.

And that’s where things get fun. He starts smoking ganja. Apparently, he prefers joints. After inhaling, he leans down close to the stencil and carefully blows the smoke onto the paper. Eventually, the paper takes on a yellowish-brownish stain wherever the stencil wasn’t covering the paper.

When he finally pulls the stencil away, the stains have left behind some very cool images.

Here’s a video of de la Rocque making a smoke painting of Uruguayan President Jose Mujica, who was in office when the country legalized marijuana:

De La Rocque said it usually takes him around a week to finish a single image. Along the way, he has to go through as many as five joints a day to get enough smoke onto the paper.

That’s a pretty good pace and a lot of smoke. You could probably get a pretty decent high just from hanging out in his apartment during one of his weeks of work.

Cannabis is illegal in Brazil, but that hasn’t stopped de la Rocque. In fact, he’s been able to turn his love of smoking pot into some decent money.

At shows in Rio de Janeiro, his cannabis smoke paintings have sold for as much as $2,500 each. But it’s unclear how much of that is actual profit.

Given how expensive cannabis is, de la Rocque’s probably spending a bit more on his medium than a painter using regular paints. But he probably has a lot more fun, too.

Some other innovative artists who have figured out how to use cannabis include Cliff Maynard, who makes mosaics out of old roach papers, and a handful of fingernail artists who have started using actual cannabis in their freestyle nail art.
