Members of St. John’s the Apostle Catholic Church in Bloomington, Indiana took their worship to entirely new highs after eating weed cookies. The only problem: they didn’t know that’s what they were eating. And now, police have arrested a 74-year-old congregation member on claims that he brought the THC-laced cookies to the church service.

A Long Investigation

The entire thing started out as a mystery. And it took a long time to solve.

Last May, six churchgoers felt a little weird after going to a morning church service. They felt nauseous, sluggish, lethargic, and generally uncomfortable. Not at all how they were expecting to feel after a calm Sunday morning at church.

After checking into the local emergency room, all six tested positive for THC. At that point, suspicions pointed to the cookies they’d eaten at church.

Brian Jones was the man responsible for the snacks. He brought them to share with his congregation. When authorities questioned him, Jones initially said he didn’t know anything about the cookies being laced with an illegal substance.

Despite Jones’s claims, however, the whole thing still seemed a little too weird. So authorities kept investigating. They eventually got a search warrant and took a look at Jones’s home.

That’s when they found an orange pill bottle full of a thick, brown, oily substance. After testing it, the police discovered that it was hash oil.

This prompted the cops to obtain a warrant for Jones’s arrest. And this week, local authorities said that Jones turned himself in. He’s now being charged with criminal recklessness and possession of hash oil. The entire investigation—from that fateful day at church to this week’s arrest—took almost a full year.

The Power Of Weed Cookies And Edibles

There are a couple reasons why the six churchgoers felt such crazy “adverse effects.” The first one is simply that they weren’t expecting to get stoned off their asses. The whole thing was probably a fairly strange surprise for them. And that only added to the general sense of confusion and discomfort.

But beyond that, the other key reason has to do with how edibles affect people. Eating cannabis often produces much stronger effects than smoking it. That’s because the human body metabolizes THC differently when you eat it.

When you smoke pot, the THC enters your bloodstream directly through your lungs. It then travels to your brain and gives you the feeling of being high.

But when you eat cannabis, the THC takes a different route. It’s processed by your liver. This takes longer, and for many people, it also creates a more intense high. And a lot of times, the delayed reaction time encourages people to keep eating weed so by the time the high finally sets in, they’ve already eaten a sh*t ton of THC.

In any case, the combo of not expecting to get high and the potent effects of eating THC probably gave those church members the most memorable Sunday of their lives. In any other context, Jones would be the life of the party. But when you sneak weed cookies in and feed them to people without telling them, it’s probably not going to go too well.
