While Donald Trump struggled to find entertainers for his inauguration, the DC Cannabis Coalition may have found another way to entertain guests during the speech.  The coalition will be handing out thousands of free joints for the inauguration speech. Even though no big name artist is performing at the inauguration, it looks like it’s still going to be lit.

4,200 joints will be handed out on the west side of Dupont Circle in Washington D.C. at 8 am on January 20th. Free coffee and tea will also be provided. Protesters will be sparking their free joints 4 minutes and 20 seconds into Trump’s speech unless he agrees to support the legalization of cannabis.

“At 4 minutes and 20 seconds into President Trump’s speech we’ll light up,” said the group in a statement.

Stressin’ Jeff Sessions

Adam Eidinger, the founder of the DC Cannabis Coalition, said that “Trump 420” is not an anti-trump event. It’s just a way to get people out to D.C. and have their voices heard. Eidinger and others are worried about Trump’s pick for attorney general: Jeff Sessions. Sessions was quoted saying “good people don’t smoke marijuana,” and many believe he’s a step away from legalization.

He also stated that “we need grown ups in Washington to say marijuana is not the kind of thing that ought to be legalized. It ought not to be minimized. That it is, in fact, a very real danger.”

Eidinger is right to fear what the appointment of Sessions will do for the progress of legalizing cannabis when he only paints it as a threat.

Is The Event Legal?

Fortunately, gifting weed is legal in D.C. So, you can’t be punished for taking a free joint. In D.C. you can possess and grow marijuana but selling or buying it remains illegal. What isn’t legal is smoking/consuming weed in public. So, the protest part of the event is illegal. Weed can only be used at home in D.C. By smoking at the inauguration, you will be breaching federal and state laws. Even consuming edibles in public isn’t allowed.

The Metropolitan Police Department is in charge of enforcing criminal violations like public consumption. The punishment for consuming cannabis in public in D.C. can be up to 60 days in jail or a $500 fine after an arrest.

Adam Eidinger told WUSA 9 News he wants people to be more open with their pot usage. He also acknowledges the potential for arrest at the event. The protest is in the form of “civil disobedience.”

“The main message is it’s time to legalize cannabis at the federal level,” he said. “I think it’s a good protest. If someone wants to do it, they are risking arrest, but it’s a protest, and you know what, the National Mall is a place for protest.”

So, getting your free joint is legal at the state level. However, full participation in the protest leaves you vulnerable to arrest for a minor offense. The Cannabis Coalition believes the risks is worth it for the cause. How many of the 4,200 joints will be lit during the inauguration speech? We’ll have a better idea later in January.
