“We’ve had a lot of people asking for their pets,” Ken Abell, who runs a dispensary in Toronto, told local sources. “I’ve actually got a disappointed lady today because we’re all sold out of the dog treats. They’re very popular.”
So far, dispensaries are selling a range of cannabis pet products. They include things like treats, tinctures, and more.

The obvious question is what cannabis does to animals. As it turns out, cannabis pet products probably won’t get your dog or cat stoned. That’s because these cannabis pet products are mostly just using CBD.
CBD is the chemical responsible for a lot of cannabis’s health and medicinal properties. THC is the stuff that gets you high.
And according to companies specializing in cannabis pet products, the focus is on getting CBD into pet snacks and tinctures. That means that your pet will get the medicinal benefits without any psychoactive effects.
Murky Scientific Backing
Although CBD pet products are becoming super popular with pet owners, there’s not a lot of scientific evidence for it. And that’s simply because there hasn’t been a lot of research into it yet.
There is a fairly large body of scientific evidence that cannabis can provide health benefits to humans. And that research is ongoing.
But there isn’t a whole lot out there specifically on how cannabis might affect animals. As a result, it’s unclear what CBD pet snacks do for pets.
“At some point in time they may be useful,” said Shane Bateman, a researcher in Ontario. “But I would only recommend them once they’ve been studied appropriately and we know for sure what the safety profile of these kinds of things are in pets.”

The explosive popularity of cannabis pet products in Canada is part of a larger movement toward legalization. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has long talked about wanting to legalize cannabis.
But the status of cannabis in Canada remains a little uncertain. On the one hand, cannabis has been decriminalized in many parts of the country. And in other places, laws have become increasingly lax.
But on the other hand, Trudeau hasn’t gotten full legalization yet. And over the summer, there was a wave of raids on Toronto dispensaries.
