Bong-accino: Starbucks Wins More Than $400k In Lawsuit Over Frappuccino Bongs

Starbucks Frappuccino Bongs

The world of weed gets a little wacky sometimes, especially when glass artists start to make frappuccino bongs. In fact, there’s a long tradition of making crazy glass smoking gear that’s both stylish and functional.

For most people, it’s all part of the fun. But apparently, Starbucks feels differently. The giant coffee corporation just won a lawsuit after it sued an artist for making bongs that looked like Frappuccino cups.

Starbucks wasn’t amused when Hitman Glass started selling its “Dabuccino” line of bongs. The glass pieces look a lot like the now iconic Starbucks Frappuccino cup. They’ve even got a Starbucks-looking logo on the side.

The Dabuccino’s mouthpiece was made to look like a straw. The body of the bong was in the shape of a Frappuccino cup.

And the logo on the side of the bong features a mermaid who looks a lot like the Starbucks siren. But on the Dabuccino she’s wearing a crown of cannabis leaves.

The bongs sold for anywhere from $200 to $8,000.

Back in June Starbucks filed a lawsuit. The company claimed that artist James Landgraf and online store Hitman Glass stole its intellectual property.

Starbucks said that Landgraf and Hitman Glass “willfully intended to create an association with the Starbucks Marks and to capitalize on the success and popularity of the Starbucks Marks to sell products.”

Basically, the folks at Starbucks said that Landgraf and Hitman Glass stole their trademarked branding.

The coffee company went on to say that the bongs “caused and will continue to cause irreparable injury and damage to Starbucks Corp.’s business, reputation, and goodwill.”

Judge Rules In Favor Of Starbucks

Although the suit was filed a few months ago, the company finally got a ruling this week. U.S. District Judge Otis D. Wright ruled in favor of Starbucks.

Landgraf didn’t show up to court. And as a result, Judge Wright ruled in favor of the coffee giant by default.

He ordered Landgraf to pay Starbucks $410,580 in damages.

“We are pleased with the court’s decision,” said a Starbucks spokesperson.

“Starbucks has made significant investments to develop our brand and intellectual property over the past 45 years. We have an obligation to protect our intellectual property from infringement in order to retain our exclusive rights to it.”

A Tradition Of Creative Bongs

Landgraf isn’t the first glass artist to make fast-food inspired bongs. People have also made bongs that look like cups from Jack in the Box, McDonald’s In-N-Out, and Burger King.

But beyond the fast food theme, people have been making wacky bongs for years.

This past 4/20, for example, an artist in Australia released a new Donald Trump bong.
