Earlier this week, news broke that Angelina Jolie has filed for a divorce from her long-time partner and husband Brad Pitt. Almost immediately, a bunch of rumors started flying around the Internet. But now it sounds like Angelina’s main reason for breaking up with Brad is because he smokes too much pot.

The Details

As soon as word got out about Angelina’s divorce filing, the interwebs blew up with rumors. One of the biggest ones was that Brad had been caught cheating with “Allied” co-star Marion Cotillard. But those claims have been pretty solidly shot down by sources close to the actress.

Instead, it sounds like Angelina just got tired of Brad’s steady use of marijuana. Some sources report that Angelina was “fed up” with his weed smoking.

Angelina filed for divorce on Monday, September 19, citing “irreconcilable differences.” According to the paperwork, she’s requesting that Brad gets only legal custody of the kids, not physical custody. That would still give him visitation rights, but not much else. Angelina is also not asking for any spousal support.

Brad and Angelina have been together since 2004, and they were married in 2014. The couple became such a pop cultural icon that they got the nickname “Brangelina.”

Early in his career, Brad quickly got the reputation for being a big fan of ganja. He once told journalists that the reason he dropped out of college two credits short of graduation was because he was smoking too much weed. And another time, he described his life as “sitting on the couch and just turning into a doughnut” from smoking too much weed.

He’s also been an outspoken advocate of legalizing cannabis and of drug law reform in general. Then in 2009, Bill Maher talked about being at a party with Brad Pitt. He said that Brad sat on the floor all night rolling the most perfect joints he’d ever seen. Brad replied by saying, “I’m an artist.”

But he then went on to say that he’d given it all up. “I’m a dad now, and you want to be alert. I certainly had my day, but now it just kind of turns me into a doughnut.” If the word coming out of Hollywood is accurate, it sounds like Brad’s claim that he gave up on weed wasn’t really true after all.
