Marijuana Fed Pigs are Bigger and Tastier Without Antibiotics or Hormones

Farmers in Washington state have been feeding their pig’s marijuana as an experiment. Now, ‘pot-pigs’ are apparently selling out of butcher shops fast.

Marijuana Fed Pigs

Pot-pig Experiment

Farmers in Washington state have been feeding their pig’s marijuana as an experiment (Pot-pigs). Cannabis is recreationally legal in Washington, so feeding pigs marijuana is not against the law. Pig farmers are always looking for new, inexpensive ways to feed their pigs. After Washington had gone, recreational pig farmers were quick to take the wasted parts of the marijuana plant that weren’t suitable for medicinal use and fed it to their pigs.

Seattle butcher, William Von Schneidau says he’s “always believed that meat’s flavour can be enhanced through a guided diet. That’s why grass fed beef tastes better than feedlot fed beef. There’s a long tradition of enhancing the flavour of pork by controlling the diet of pigs. This (feeding pigs marijuana) just seemed like a great experiment.”

Recycling Marijuana Waste

Cannabis growers usually have an excess of leftover stems, roots, and trimmings from their plants. Susannah Gross, the owner of a five-acre farm in Seattle, WA and her group of farmers, hope to make use of unwanted marijuana products. They also hoped the munchies most people on marijuana experience would be passed onto the pigs.

Pigs, like most mammals, have an endocannabinoid system. One of the main ways the main ingredient in marijuana impacts humans is by attaching to the endocannabinoid that increases appetite. The farmers hoped this would be the case for the pigs that were fed marijuana leaves.

Four pigs were fed potent marijuana trimmings for four months, and they all gained 20 to 30 pounds more than half-dozen other pigs who were not fed marijuana.

“They were eating more, as you can imagine,” Gross said.

Who is eating pot-pigs?

According to William, pot-pigs are selling out of his butcher shop fast. He says they’re being purchased by more than just hippies and stoners.

“I think most of our customers are sophisticated enough to realise this has more to do with sustainable, local farming practices then getting “high.” Don’t get me wrong; we’re having a lot of fun with this, but the message behind the fun is sustainable and responsible farming and locally grown meat. What would you rather eat? A pork chop from a pig raised on antibiotics and hormones, or a pork chop from a pig raised on spent vodka grains and marijuana?” – William Von Schneidau

Marijuana waste offers farmers a way to beef up their pigs without antibiotics or added hormones. Some people have said marijuana-fed pig meat is more savory than other pork. So why wouldn’t all healthy consumers be interested in eating pot-pigs?

The Final Hit

With the success seen in the experiment above perhaps farmers of other animals like chickens and cows can turn to marijuana instead of antibiotics and hormones. Let’s not forget the most savory flavors that some reported in pot-pig meat.

We’d heard about grass-fed beef tasting better, but we never knew the devil’s lettuce (marijuana slang) was capable of the same thing. Feeding a cow marijuana may lead it to eat even more grass which might make it larger and better tasting. The future of marijuana-fed livestock has our mouths watering.
