Favorite Strains Of Each State Revealed

What’s your state’s new favorite strain of cannabis? Is your favorite the same as everyone’s favorite? Data from internet searches for cannabis varieties leading up to and through April 20, 2016,  reveals each state’s (and D.C.’s) favorite strains.

Having just legalized medical marijuana, Pennsylvania wants to know more about Blue Dream.

As its residents hang onto hope for recreational legalization, Vermont is curious about Zombie OG.

And while many may wonder about the most prevalent strain in Colorado (spoiler alert: it’s Blue Dream), it’s just as interesting to see that Chemdawg is rapidly gaining market share.

In fact, Blue Dream may well be on its way to becoming one of the favorite strains in the country. It’s trending fastest in nine states, more than any other strain. Considering a list of the current favorite strains in each state, Blue Dream would win much of the map.

Even though Blue Dream continues its upward trend, two more hybrid strains look to be gaining market share. Girl Scout Cookie is trending fastest in six states, with Gorilla Glue #4 on its heels with five states.

As far as sativas go, Sour Diesel and Green Crack capture the most interest, in four states each.

Speaking of sativas, it turns out that most states in the U.S. prefer sativa-dominant strains to indicas. Since sativas tend to produce a more alert, energetic high, it makes sense that people looking to function throughout the day prefer them.

Only four states are more interested in indicas than sativas. These are South Dakota, New Mexico, Connecticut, and Vermont.

Indicas are also trending slower than sativas across the board. The favored indicas — CBD Shark, Tangerine Kush, Zombie OG and Granddaddy Purple — are each represented in just one state.

The East Coast, West Coast divide also played out in which cannabis strains are most sought-after. The West Coast loves hybrid strains, just like many more of the northern and western states.

What are Oregonians looking for? Pineapple Express. Probably because they like their weed with a side of James Franco! Washington users went safe with Blue Dream, the fastest trending strain in the study and the winner of nine states.

California also picked a popular one: Gorilla Glue #4, winner in five states.

The Eastern half of the country is crazy about sativas. Why not? In the east, winters are colder and the rainy season is longer.

Easterners don’t enjoy the constant sunny weather Californians do, so they’re more often in the mood for a high that’s euphoric and uplifting to power through the dreariness.

“We determined the fastest-trending strain in every U.S. state by looking at which strains surged in popularity in each location since the start of 2016.”
