Football star Robert Nkemdiche charged with marijuana possession after falling out of fourth floor window

After mysteriously falling out of a hotel window, Ole Miss defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche has been charged with marijuana possession, authorities reported on Monday.

The whole thing started over the weekend when the star lineman somehow managed to crash through the window of his room at the Grand Hyatt in Atlanta and then fell, first to a ledge located directly beneath the window, and then again to the sidewalk below.

According to ESPN, both falls were approximately 15 feet.

When people found the 6-foot-4, 296-pound athlete lying on the sidewalk outside the hotel he was conscious and breathing.

The New York Daily News reported that Nkemdiche suffered “multiple cuts,” but was listed as stable by Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was taken for treatment.

While investigations into just what happened are apparently still ongoing, the Atlanta Police Department released an incident report describing Nkemdiche’s fall.

The report said that when cops arrived on the scene and searched his room they found “seven rolled marijuana cigarettes, rolled in Cigarillo Blunt papers.” They also said that “the room was in complete disarray.”

He’s now being charged with marijuana possession, and authorities are apparently linking the pot found in the athlete’s room to his unexplained fall through the window.

It remains unclear, however, exactly what happened between Nkemdiche, his stash of weed, and his ending up on the sidewalk four stories below. Some some sources —like SEC Country—have reported that “Nkemdiche became ‘paranoid and convinced someone was chasing’ him.”

Fox Sports reporter Clay Travis claimed that Nkemdiche had been using synthetic marijuana, and that a negative reaction to the drug led to his accident.

“Nkemdiche’s fall was the result of his use of synthetic cannabinoids . . . which has become an increasingly popular drug among athletes—and college students—because it doesn’t show up on drug tests,” Travis wrote.

“But unlike traditional marijuana, synthetic marijuana, made with processed chemicals of varying substances and quantities, can lead to paranoia, delusion, and hallucinations.”

Nkemdiche is generally considered to be one of the best defensive players in the country, and ESPN ranks him as “the top defensive tackle” in the NCAA.
