The Craziest Failed Marijuana Smuggling Attempts of 2015

In recognition of the sometimes weird, dangerous, and absurd attempts smugglers make to get weed into the U.S., here are three of the year’s craziest weed smuggling attempts.

Obviously, the fact that we know about these attempts means that they were failed ones.

Who knows how many bizarre smuggling efforts actually succeeded—in fact, the pot you’re smoking right now could have found its way into your bowl through the efforts of some unthinkably strange smuggling operation.

1. Weed Watermelons

In May, a truckload of watermelons showed up at the border crossing in Nogales, Arizona. The seemingly mundane shipment suddenly became interesting when a drug-sniffing dog alerted officials that there might be something else in the truck.

Upon further inspection, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Mariposa Port of Entry discovered 128 watermelon-shaped bundles of marijuana mixed in with the real watermelons.

These weed melons added up to almost 1,500 pounds of ganja, worth nearly $728,000 CBP.

In October, authorities discovered that what everyone had previously assumed was just a carpet shop was in fact the northern terminal of one of the biggest drug smuggling tunnels ever discovered in the U.S.

The tunnel linked Tijuana, Mexico to the Otay Mesa neighborhood of San Diego.

It was dug 32 feet below the surface, stretched across more than 800 yards, and used a high-tech system of electrical lighting, ventilation, and rail transportation to ship loads of weed across the border.

When cops found the tunnel, it was loaded with 12 tons of market-ready pot valued at $6 million.

A semi coming out of Mexico claiming to haul six spools of wound cable ran into some troubles at the Bridge of the Americas commercial cargo lot in El Paso, Texas last April.

As Alternet summarized it: “But the spools didn’t really contain cable; they contained 1,365 pounds of marijuana so artfully hidden it took CBP agents more than 12 hours to remove the drugs from the specially constructed hidden compartments.”
